Why did we call our cabins The Flora and The Fauna? We wanted to celebrate the flora and fauna that make Prince Edward Island such a very special place on Earth. PEI may be a small island, but we have an abundance of natural beauty and diversity of species that contribute to the Island’s ecosystem.
Curious about the species of fauna that live on PEI? The Island is home to many animals, including, but certainly not limited to: beavers, eastern coyotes, minks, muskrats, raccoons, red foxes, red squirrels, striped skunks, weasels, and snowshoe hares. Our freshwater fish species include Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout and white perch, PEI is also home to 333 species of birds including great blue herons, piping plovers, bald eagles, Canada geese, and ducks.
The Island also features an abundance of trees, plants and flowers – both native and exotic (invasive) species. Within the PEI parks system alone, there are over 600 plant species accounted for. Our provincial flower is the gorgeous Lady Slipper, a spring-flowering type of orchid that grows best in acidic and moist soils. You’ll also see plenty of wildflowers as you explore the Island’s countryside including lupins, brown-eyed susans, buttercups, mayflowers, primroses, violets, wild asters, goldenrods, and daisies. The Island is home to a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees, including spruce, birch, evergreen, maple, oak, beech, ash, and elm. The waters surrounding PEI also feature a highly-valued flora known as Irish Moss, which is harvested along the shore or by using drag rakes in the ocean.
